Over his career as a songwriter and musical storyteller, Robert “Bobby” Lopez has primarily collaborated on projects with other incredible songwriters, most often his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, and that's the way he most enjoys the epically long and deceptively difficult journey of making a musical. In his youth, however, he began as a solo writer of music and lyrics, and he has continued to work that way over the years without having much of a goal for it. These little songs and snippets which he has chosen for the Kinetek | Gallery exhibition ‘Source Data’ have very little in common with one another aside from never having been heard by anyone. They originate from different projects, are centered around different themes, and were written at different times in his life. But on further reflection, he feels they all reflect a gentleness and solace that the act of writing, playing, and listening to music can sometimes give him, and which he values greatly. He has decided to call the collection “Small Acts of Compliance.” Writing music, he gets the feeling of asserting and expressing himself at the same time as he is yielding to a larger presence.
